The compulsory basic training course (C.B.T.) was introduced in 1990 and has been in its current form since 1996
The aim of the course is to raise road safety awareness to new and returning motorcyclists, therefore reducing accidents.
Anyone who wishes to ride a motorcycle on the road must successfully complete the CBT course.The completed CBT course allows a rider to ride a machine of up to 125cc on the road unaccompanied with L plates on.

The CBT certificate is valid for 2 years. If you do not pass your practical test within 2 years then you will need to do another CBT if you wish to continue riding motorcycles on the road.
